One does not stumble into a growing relationship with God. Living a spiritual life is an intentional act that invites the Spirit of God to be at the heart of everything one does. Nouwen cites Brother Laurence, seventeenth century French Carmelite, who writes, "We may make an oratory of our heart...to converse with him in meekness, humility, and love. Everyone is capable of such familiar conversation with God..." "Familiar" should not be understood as routine or frivolous, but a compelling place of communication where the heart is open and the mind focused on the living God.
